Vice Admiral Davis discusses his background in Ohio, training at the U.S. Naval Academy, and a Navy career which spanned forty years. Included in his reminiscences are accounts of duty aboard the battleships Massachusetts, Iowa, Deleware, Kansas, and Kentucky prior to W.W. I. War time service aboard the tanker Maumee (1916-1919) is related as is post war assignments to the Tennessee, Wyoming, and Blakely. Special attention is given to the Veracruz affair and duty aboard the Philadelphia (1937-1939) with President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a passenger.

Vice Admiral Davis, a 1913 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, served aboard the U.S.S. KANSAS during the occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico. During World War I, he served aboard the tanker MAUMEE and subsequently saw duty aboard a variety of battleships, destroyers and cruisers.
